A German wanted to enter Switzerland from Vorarlberg at the end of October. His companion on this journey: a stuffed cheetah. It went wrong.
As the cantonal police are only now reporting, a German from Vorarlberg wanted to enter Switzerland at the end of October via the St. Margrethen border crossing. In his trunk he had another passenger with him: a cheetah – albeit stuffed. The exotic cargo was destined for a resident of Switzerland.
However, the dotted goods were not issued because the German did not have a specific permit for import, namely the so-called CITES permit. This is necessary when it comes to endangered animals. The international agreement for the protection of species CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), also known as the “Washington species protection agreement”, regulates trade in endangered animal and plant species and in products made from such animal and plant species.
In any case, the stuffed cheetah was confiscated by the customs officials. It is not yet clear what will happen to the animal.
