In our part of the world, feral cats are considered nearly extinct. Now a male animal, a so-called Kuder, was run over by a motorist in the Carinthian Gailtal.
At Feistritz an der Gail, the wild cat wanted to cross Vorderberger Landesstraße on Thursday morning. But this venture ended fatally for the animal, as it was first hit by a car and then run over by a transporter. The rare cat remained virtually unharmed on the verge on the outside. Police hunter Peter Hebein was called to the natural disaster and was able to save the animal.
DNA analysis for species identification
On Friday, the state of Carinthia examined the cat, which is almost one meter long and weighs exactly 8.85 kilograms, and DNA was taken. “We are not quite sure yet whether it really is a wild cat, that must first be proven by the DNA analysis,” explains wildlife biologist Thomas Huber. “But there are a lot of clues.” As early as January 2006, a feral cat was run over by a car near Feistritz and killed.
As reported, another specimen was recently photographed by a hunter in East Tyrol. The sighting is considered a wildlife sensation and has since been confirmed by experts.
