After an eruption of the Semeru volcano on the Indonesian island of Java, authorities have declared the highest warning level. The volcano, which spewed an ash plume several hundred feet high on Sunday, threatened surrounding villages, the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Management said.
Residents within a five-mile radius of the crater have been advised to evacuate the area, it said. In Japan, the Semeru eruption triggered a tsunami warning. It applies to the Miyako and Yaeyama island chains in Okinawa prefecture, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported.
Nearly a year ago today, 34 people died when Semeru volcano erupted. Several villages were subsequently covered in mud and ash. Nearly 10,000 residents had to flee their homes.
Indonesia has about 130 active volcanoes. The Southeast Asian island nation is located on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. There, several tectonic plates collide, so that earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are particularly common.
