On the smartphone – EU countries are setting the course for digital identity cards

Date:

The EU states agreed in Brussels on Tuesday on a common position on the legal framework for a digital European identity document (eID). This should ensure universal access for citizens and businesses “to secure and reliable electronic identification and authentication using a personal digital wallet on a mobile phone”, the Council Presidency announced.

“My well-known goal is to offer almost all administrative procedures digitally by 2024 and to bring all identity cards from wallet to mobile phone,” said Florian Tursky, State Secretary for Digitization and Telecommunications at the Ministry of Finance.

Digital driver’s license already available in this country
With the new EU regulation, national digital identities must be used and also accepted for all administrative procedures in the EU member states. Tursky referred to the digital driving license in Austria.

In concrete terms, according to the European Commission, it would also be easier to rent a car or open a bank account abroad. In addition, young adults will be able to prove their age in a cafe in the future without revealing their place of residence or other personal information.

Before the regulation can enter into force, the EU countries still have to negotiate with the EU parliament. However, the members of the European Parliament have not yet found a common position.
