“Descending trend” – detection of coronavirus in wastewater is declining

Date:

New analysis results in Austria show: The virus spread of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater is decreasing again. The number of reproductions derived from the samples is currently 1.14.

Well above 1.0, but “with a declining trend”. This is evident from the update published on Wednesday by the Covid forecasting consortium. Accordingly, in the next two weeks there will be a slight increase in bed occupancy in infected people in normal wards and a constant occupancy in intensive care.

Less than last week
In the previous week, the model’s calculators had reported a significant increase in evidence of coronavirus in wastewater in most states. However, the effective number of reproductions estimated from the test behavior also shows a downward trend with a value of 1.03.

No higher system load expected
The variants BQ.1, BQ.1.1 and BQ.1.1.10 accounted for the majority of the reported new infections in the penultimate calendar week (week 47) at 35 percent. “There is still no reason to believe that the mentioned omicron subvariants lead to more hospital admissions,” emphasize the experts from Vienna University of Technology, MedUni Vienna and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH (GÖG). Therefore, it cannot be assumed that there will be a significantly higher Covid-specific system load than during the last two waves of infection in July and October.
