According to British intelligence, Russia apparently continues to expand its defense positions in Ukraine. Accordingly, some Russian decision-makers would be concerned about a possible Ukrainian attack. The move could also play into the hands of Kremlin propaganda.
Sophisticated systems have been set up in the Belgorod border area to defend against attacks, according to a report from the British Ministry of Defense on Wednesday. Trenches were also dug.
“Self-defense Units” established
Furthermore, the governor of Belgorod stated on Tuesday that local “self-defense units” would be set up. In addition to trenches, the systems would be complicated systems capable of repelling “mechanized attacks”.
In London, these precautions are interpreted as concerns about a Ukrainian invasion. It is also conceivable that the Kremlin wants to strengthen patriotism at home. There is a real possibility that one could arouse “patriotic feelings” in one’s own population.
Unfounded concern?
However, a real fear of an invasion cannot be ruled out either – according to the secret service, however, there is no real threat from the Ukrainian armed forces. Officially, however, Russia is currently quite tense: President Vladimir Putin only convened the National Security Council on Tuesday.
This was due to drone strikes believed to have originated from Ukraine on Russian territory and damaged military airports. Putin spoke of “terrorist acts”, and therefore “necessary measures” will be taken to “protect” the country from Ukraine.
