The need is increasing, poverty is affecting more and more people. One in five Austrians now wonder whether they should eat or heat their home.
The latest figures from Statistics Austria show what has long been revealed in the advice centers of the Labor Chamber, Caritas or Volkshilfe: poverty is much more widespread in our country than previously believed. The effects of the massive wave of inflation are becoming increasingly apparent.
The three organizations are therefore once again sounding the alarm and calling on the federal government to take action. According to the AK, one in five Austrians can no longer afford the necessary monthly expenses!
“Eating or heating?”
“Eating or heating?” According to AK chairman Renate Anderl, this has become a real question for more and more people. A permanent increase in social benefits and targeted measures for all those hardest hit by inflation are called for. There must be an anti-inflation package for the bottom third of the income bracket.
The need is spreading. In Vienna alone, 26 tons of food are distributed. Weekly. Before the extreme price increase, that was 17 tons, according to Anna Parr of Caritas. Volkshilfe director Tanja Wehsely refers to the national action plan against child poverty.
