A mother and her daughter escaped from a burning house in Hirtenberg (Lower Austria) on Thursday night. Five fire brigades with 64 helpers were deployed to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is the subject of a police investigation.
The daughter was awakened by a bang. Noticing the smell of burning, her mother woke her up. Both managed to escape outside. According to the order of the district fire brigade, flames were shooting out of the conservatory and dark clouds of smoke were billowing from the roof.
Loud cries for help also woke up the neighbors, who immediately alerted the emergency services with their presence of mind. The fire service was called just before 4:30 a.m. Red Cross ambulance personnel took care of the shocked residents.
“Family was very lucky”
“The family was very lucky in the accident – a few minutes later the escape route would no longer have been passable for the family,” said FF Hirtenberg’s chief of operations, Commander Franz Xaver Wallisch.
Respiratory protection teams have removed roof tiles to fight the fire in the basement. Loose embers in the beams were located and extinguished with the thermal imaging camera. The occupants were not injured, but the building sustained significant property damage. The house is currently uninhabitable, the conservatory has collapsed.
