A widespread power outage occurred in the French capital Paris on Thursday evening. Grid operator RTE announced that 125,000 households in the third, fourth and fifth districts, among others, were temporarily without power. A fault in a transformer was given as the reason.
As France prepares for possible power cuts during a harsh winter, the mayor of central Paris (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th arrondissements) Ariel Weil joked that he hadn’t expected the power to go out so quickly. However, things are getting worse in most affected districts After 15 to 20 minutes, the power was back on, says Weil.
The blackout occurred on the eve of an exercise by the French authorities, simulating time and regionally limited power cuts in a region on Friday. On social networks, residents shared photos of entire streets that were in the dark (see tweets below).
Preparing for limited shutdowns
Because numerous French nuclear power plants are currently under maintenance, delivery bottlenecks are expected in January. The government has therefore started preparations for local power outages at peak loads. This is to prevent an uncontrolled blackout.
On Friday, processes must be simulated for a shutdown without actually taking place on that day. If the measure is actually necessary, it must be announced one day in advance.
