Billionaire takes artists on a Journey around the Moon

Date:

Japanese fashion billionaire Yusaku Maezawa is taking eight artists aboard the SpaceX space shuttle for its planned space trip around the moon. The 47-year-old, who flew to the International Space Station (ISS) as a space tourist last year, announced the names of his crew members on Friday – including DJ and music producer Steve Aoki and Korean K-pop musician Top.

Maezawa, founder of online fashion site Zozo, announced his “dearMoon” project in 2018, in which he plans to fly around the moon for a week in 2023 aboard a spacecraft from Elon Musk’s rocket and satellite company SpaceX. In March last year, the wealthy entrepreneur invited people who “see themselves as artists” to accompany him on his space journey.

Crew chosen from a million applicants
Anyone applying for the crew should feel that space travel will push the boundaries of their creative pursuits and ultimately lead to “helping other people and society”. The eight members of his crew were selected from approximately one million applicants. Maezawa foots the bill for the entire week-long trip to the moon.

Other crew members include Irish photographer Rhiannon Adam, Indian actor Dev Joshi, American YouTuber Tim Dodd, Czech choreographer Yemi AD, British photographer Karim Iliya and American filmmaker Brendan Hall.
