Power plants damaged – Ukraine announces power cuts in winter

Date:

People can expect power outages all winter due to the Russian attacks on the Ukrainian power grid. Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal said this on Friday during a cabinet meeting in Kiev. Although the situation is currently “under control”, there are still shortcomings in the power supply due to the damage.

“All thermal and hydroelectric power plants in the country have been damaged.” In addition, about 40 percent of high-voltage grid systems have been damaged to varying degrees. “Therefore, power supply constraints are still significant in most regions,” he summarized.

Provision of the civilian population ranks fourth
“Let’s face it, this winter we will constantly live in conditions of limited electricity consumption,” he said, according to the state agency Unian. Priorities should be set. Priority is given to vital infrastructure, such as hospitals and water and heat supply, followed by the military-industrial complex under the motto “Everything for the front”. Only in third place are critical supply objects such as bakeries or dairies. Providing the civilian population with electricity is only fourth.

Volodymyr Kudryzkyj, head of the state electricity grid operator Ukrenerho, had previously pointed out the problems. The electricity shortage can be partly compensated with measures such as electricity imports, “but not completely”.

Entire energy infrastructure targeted
The Russian missile strikes in recent weeks have targeted the entire energy infrastructure of Ukraine. This caused the power supply to collapse in large parts of the country. We have now succeeded in providing the population with electricity at least per hour.

Heavy losses in the Russian army
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the situation in important parts of the Donbass in eastern Ukraine remains very difficult. Ukrainian forces repelled Russian attacks, Zelenskyy said in his evening video address. The Russian army suffered heavy losses. However, the Russian soldiers destroyed the city of Bakhmut, one of the epicenters of the recent fighting, Zelensky added.
