Violence during protests – EU wants to tighten sanctions against Iran

Date:

The European Union (EU) wants to tighten its sanctions against Iran. Nearly 30 other responsible persons and institutions would have been affected, Brussels diplomats said on Friday. They should be punished for human rights violations and drone deliveries to Russia.

20 Iranian leaders and one organization are tackling violence against demonstrators in the country. They would be subject to asset and entry bans, Brussels diplomats said. Eight other officials and institutions would face sanctions for supplying Iranian drones to Russia. A decision on both measures must be taken next Monday.

Revolutionary Guard not on the terror list for now
In addition, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) had called for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards to be placed on the EU terror list. According to a spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry in Berlin, this has been postponed due to “difficult legal requirements”. For this, there must be investigations against the Revolutionary Guards in at least one Member State. According to speculation, that could already be the case. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard is suspected of attacks on synagogues in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The hard course continues
Irrespective of the announced sanctions, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has reaffirmed the political leadership’s tough stance against demonstrators in the country. “Troublemakers” and those responsible for the deaths of security forces are being identified and “determinedly” prosecuted, he said, according to the Iranian daily Shargh. Critics say the president could have defended the death sentence against protester Mohsen Shekari that was carried out on Thursday. This is officially the first execution linked to the protests.

The demonstrators demand, among other things, the end of the Islamic Republic and the lifting of the headscarf. The cause of the nationwide protests, which have been going on for about three months, was the death of the Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody after being arrested for allegedly violating Islamic dress codes. More than 18,000 people have been arrested in the protests so far, according to human rights activists.
