In future, the origin of beef goulash and other dishes must be labeled in the canteens.
More than 2.2 million dishes are consumed every day in domestic commercial kitchens and canteens! Agriculture minister Norbert Totschnig sees this as an effective lever to get large portions of valuable food from local farmers on our plates.
“The mandatory designation of origin, which will come into force in mid-2023, makes it possible. If guests order a beef goulash or Kaiserschmarren in the canteen, they will know where the meat or eggs come from in the future,” says the Turkish minister.
The rule of origin also applies to canteen kitchens in hospitals, schools and retirement homes. Consumer Protection Minister Johannes Rauch believes that the hunger for local food will increase enormously.” He praises the “practical solutions”: “Canteen kitchens can carry out the claim according to the EU or non-EU, as well as the country of origin or region. But there’s also the option of a percentage of provenance over the one-year observation period – i.e. how much comes from our farmers and producers or not.”
Four Paws Criticizes “Toothless Regulation”
Four-legged expert Veronika Weissenböck denounces the “toothless regulation”: “The information that an ingredient comes from Austria is not enough. Only additional information about the livestock sector ensures full plate transparency for consumers who want to snack and eat animal-friendly. And what does EU or non-EU mean? EU actually?”
