The skull of a Tyrannosaurus rex has been sold at an auction in New York for about six million dollars (about 5.7 million euros). An anonymous bidder awarded the contract Friday for $ 6.1 million, according to auction house Sotheby’s. Previously, experts from Sotheby’s had counted on $ 20 million.
According to the auction house, it is one of the most complete sets of skull bones ever discovered. The approximately 76 million year old skull, nicknamed ‘Maximus’, was discovered on private property in the US state of South Dakota. It is about two meters tall and weighs about 90 kilograms.
vThe auction of dinosaur bones is under scrutiny
Last summer, a skeleton of a Gorgosaurus was auctioned in New York for about six million dollars, shortly before that a skeleton of the dinosaur species Deinonychus antirrhopus for about twelve million dollars. In 2020, a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton fetched more than $30 million. However, many experts are critical of the auctioning of scientifically valuable skeletons.
