No arrest for suspects, but ex-minister was detained for four weeks: what does the alleged rape of a 16-year-old student in Linz have to do with former family minister Sophie Karmasin? Nothing, lawyers will say, because any comparison between different criminal cases is not allowed. All the more so because one case is about a violent crime, the other about the suspicion of infidelity.
The four youths in the Linz case, three from Afghanistan and one from Iran, were released at the earliest opportunity after two weeks in detention. Although it is suspected that they have lured a girl to a former postal distribution center near the central station. Exact DNA tests of the traces found on the girl are still missing, but the authorities assume that the rape has been completed.
Ex-minister was in custody
In contrast, the former family minister, Sophie Karmasin, had to return to her solitary cell two weeks after the detention hearing. Although her lawyers were able to provide confirmations that her company has long since been dissolved, that she no longer works as a pollster and that there is no longer any risk of recidivism. According to the public prosecutor, Sophie Karmasin would have received orders from the Ministry of Sports for more than 140,000 euros after her political career. She is also involved in the advertising affair that lists former Chancellor Sebastian Kurz as a suspect.
Lawyers saw “disproportionate hardship” in the decision to continue the pre-trial detention. Especially now that Sophie Karmasin has been integrated in Austria and the court did not accept the risk of going into hiding.
The case is reminiscent of the Leonie tragedy
This is also the case with the four young people. But they are not integrated in Austria at all. They were probably released only because of their age of 14 and 15 years. The case in Linz is reminiscent of the Leonie tragedy in Vienna. The girl is said to have been drugged and raped by four Afghans and died in the process.
