Expensive consequences – Villacher drove through five tunnels as a wrong-way driver

A Thursday morning in Villach on the A23 motorway in Italy caused dangerous scenes. The man was driving in the wrong direction – 16 kilometers and five (!) tunnels later, the driver could finally be stopped. His journey has serious and expensive consequences.

The incident happened on Thursday morning when the traffic police operations center of Udine received a report about a vehicle entering the A23 in Friuli, which connects Carinthia to Italy, in the wrong direction. At the Ugovizza highway barrier, traffic was immediately blocked, resulting in a long traffic jam.

The Villacher was 10 miles in the wrong direction, traversing five tunnels before a patrol could stop it. Fortunately there was no accident.

Fine up to 10,700 euros
An alcohol test revealed five times the legal limit. The Friulian media reported that Villach’s driver’s license had been revoked. The suspect has been charged and will have to pay a fine. The fine amount is between 2,670 and 10,700 euros.
