Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin wants to continue the development of Russia’s nuclear forces. “We will continue to pay more attention to strengthening the nuclear triad,” he said in a Kremlin speech on Thursday’s Defender of the Fatherland Day.
The head of state announced that the new Sarmat ICBM, which can be equipped with nuclear warheads, will enter service for the first time this year. That was originally planned for 2022. In addition, serial production of the Kinzhal missile will continue and mass delivery of ship-launched Zircon hypersonic missiles will begin.
“A modern, efficient army and navy guarantees the security and sovereignty of a country,” said the 70-year-old.
“Fighting neo-Nazism in Ukraine”
With Ukraine in mind, Putin now thanked everyone involved in the war for Russia (see video above), which he dubbed a “special military operation.” Again, he placed today’s Russian soldiers in a tradition with those who fought Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler in World War II during the Soviet era.
“Today our soldiers are fighting heroically against the neo-Nazism that has taken root in Ukraine. They defend our people in our historical areas, they fight bravely and heroically,” Putin said.
In his key state of the nation speech on Tuesday, Putin announced he would modernize his military, which international military experts have repeatedly stated has huge equipment problems in the war against Ukraine. In the speech, Putin also announced the suspension of the last major nuclear disarmament treaty with the United States. In the West he was sharply criticized for this.
