Civilians die – Ukrainian soldiers attack occupied territories

Date:

The Ukrainian army is currently attacking targets in the Russian-occupied areas of the country. At the same time, the Russian air force also carried out several strikes on Sunday, the Ukrainian General Staff said. At least two civilians were killed in the current fighting.

At least ten other people were injured. This is what the Russian side said about the attacks on their occupied city of Melitopol in southeastern Ukraine. There had been artillery attacks since Saturday evening. The city’s Ukrainian mayor, who is in exile, confirmed that the attack had begun and spoke of dozens of “invaders” killed. This information cannot be independently confirmed. Among other things, a church would have been hit, which the Russian occupiers had converted into a meeting place.

From Melitopol to Crimea?
Melitopol is an important industrial and transportation center and has been occupied by Russia since March. “All logistical links between the Russian armed forces in the eastern part of the Kherson region and up to the Russian border at Mariupol pass through it,” said Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in a video posted on social media. media. “If Melitopol falls, the whole line of defense up to Kherson will collapse. Ukrainian troops will have a direct route to Crimea.”

Another Ukrainian attack allegedly took place in the Russian-occupied city of Donetsk. Russian Defense Ministry officials said on Sunday that their military had intercepted several HIMARS missile launchers. In total, four Ukrainian missiles reached their target, for example, a recreation center in the Zaporizhia region.

The Ukrainian army’s plan is “to liberate all temporarily occupied territories to the state they had in 1991, when the country’s borders were internationally recognized,” Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said on Sunday.

Russian attacks on Kherson
Russian troops are said to have attacked the Kherson region 45 times in the past day alone. According to the Ukrinform news agency, two civilians were killed and five others injured, said the head of the military administration, Yaroslav Yanushevich. The fronts in Ukraine have been largely static for several weeks, despite heavy fighting in several hot spots. The soldiers mainly use artillery, missiles and drones.
