Eva Kaili, the recently deposed vice-president of the European Parliament, is said to have received bribes from the Gulf state of Qatar to influence political decisions for the World Cup host country. On Tuesday it went quickly, she went to the brand new luxury prison Haren near Brussels. She has a prominent inmate there.
Kaili was transferred on Monday from the women’s wing of Sint-Gillisprison in Brussels to the more modern prison in the Haren district. The prison there only opened in October and is said to hold some 1,190 prisoners. The aging prisons of Berkendael and Vorst in Brussels, which have been repeatedly denounced for their appalling prison conditions, will be closed once all prisoners have been transferred.
