SPÖ city councilor Peter Hacker sees the accusation that Vienna is luring migrants with aid payments as an attempt to divert attention from the lack of integration efforts in other states. It is not about how much Vienna pays, but about how little politicians do there.
According to the ÖVP and FPÖ, the influx of migrants from the federal states is due to “excessive” and “generous” social benefits in Vienna – not only, but also for migrants. This makes Vienna a “social magnet”. The ÖVP therefore calls for social benefits to be adjusted to the level of neighboring states, and the FPÖ to suspend all support payments. For Social councilor Peter Hacker, this is cynicism, especially from the ÖVP corner.
