The European Forum Alpbach has planned a live video connection with Pope Francis. He could be the opening speaker at the “Europe in the World Days” in August. The events team expects more than 4,000 participants again this year.
So far, German State Minister for Europe Anna Lührmann, former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, Rafael Grossi of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Polish Justice Minister Adam Bodnar have agreed. Nobel Prize winner Anton Zeilinger and Sabine Herlitschka from Infineon Austria are expected to attend from Austria. In addition, ten to twelve government members are expected, according to Forum chairman Andreas Treichl. He also notices interest from parties “that normally do not come to Alpach.”
Areas of interest such as climate and democracy
The event in the Tyrolean Alpbach will take place for the 80th time this year from August 17 to 30. This time the focus is on climate, economy and finance, security and democracy. There are five modules, such as an exchange of experts and a meeting of decision makers. The program is expected to be extended until August.
“We are entering a time that could change Europe and the world enormously,” Treichl said, referring to the EU elections, the National Council elections and the US presidential elections.
