More than three weeks after the murder of grazer Gymnasium Dreierschützengasse, the question is how to continue at the school increasingly. According to the parents, former students now speak with an open letter – and make a passionate plea for the educational institution.
“This school is a place that rarely exists – someone who gives young people a voice, despite an individual path, despite the performance system, offers students a room for friends, community and coherence and is especially if you need more.” This is in an open letter that former 8D class students (2017 to 2021) wrote in the Borg Dreierschützengasse.
The school now has the whole of Austria, because on 10 June it became the scene of a tragic murderous Spree that cost ten people. Some students have been back in the building since last week. The question of how quickly the return to normality should take place and how young people can also be helped during the summer holidays is currently being discussed. For example, the parents’ association spoke out on Wednesday and even discussed a shift in the school start in the fall.
There is now an open letter from the former 8D class. She describes her former school in warm and positive words – read the entire formulation below. Individual statements from former students were also transferred. Here are extracts:
This open letter from a former class of Borg Dreierschützengasse is aimed at the public, the newspapers and everyone who feels connected to this school. We would like to clarify one thing: this school means a lot to us, and it hurts to read lines that represent this place differently than it is and was.
If you think back to your school days after a long time, it happens easier and faster than expected to put on pink glasses, to imagine the stressful and demanding times and immersing yourself in a warm color. We don’t do that here, because given this unimaginable and shattering event, we must be honest. So the shiny glasses decreased:
This school is a place that rarely exists – one that gives young people a voice, despite an individual path, despite performance system, offers students a room for friends, community and coherence and is especially there when you need more. What we mean by this is an offer: rich hands that young people can use in challenging phases of life when they need it. Teachers who see people and, apart from numbers, also look behind the implementation facade.
Until a few weeks ago this place was safer – and it will be again. When this school then continues as before. It is certain that you can always be a little better. But at the moment it is important for us to emphasize that this school is doing so much well. If someone is responsible here, it is political – and we all who have to maintain our society and peace more.
We would like to say that the Borg Dreierschützengasse has not only taught us to perform in the study and working world, but especially the instrument and aids that are in the hand and become the class and community that we are today- regardless of the origin, what gender, sexual orientation or social class.
With this in mind, we take an example at this school and we stay together, maintain society and shake hands – together for a better and more peaceful future for all Austrians and for all people who live here. Based on the motto of the Borg Dreierschützengasse: “Learn for life together”
Warm and in infinite care, former 8D class students (2017-2021)
