Six people, including two young police officers, were killed in a police operation on a remote estate in Australia on Monday. During the investigation into a missing person case, they drove to a property on the outskirts of the town of Wiembilla in Queensland, the police said on Tuesday.
There the officials were immediately shot at. According to media reports, one of the perpetrators was a supporter of conspiracy theories. “As soon as they entered the premises, they were fired upon – they didn’t stand a chance,” said Queensland Police Chief Ian Leavers. The two young officers were “executed in cold blood”.
Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll said they made “the final sacrifice to keep our society safe” as they fought back tears. The killed police officers were a 26-year-old and a 29-year-old who were at the beginning of their careers. Two other police officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Smoke rose above the building
According to local media, one of them was a cop who had only been with the police for eight weeks. She sent desperate messages to her loved ones when residents of the property tried to release her from her bush hideout. Aerial photos showed a zinc-roofed bungalow and a burnt-out vehicle, with smoke billowing from the property.
According to reports, the four officers drove to the property that belonged to the missing man’s brother on Monday morning because of a former elementary school principal who had been missing since 2021. After the shots were fired at the police officers, a special unit with a dozen officers rushed to the scene. Their siege of the property lasted until just after 10:30 p.m. local time, eventually three suspects – two men and a woman – were dead. Police did not provide information about their identities.
Dead body of neighbor found
Police also found another body on the property. According to the initial police findings, it concerns a 58-year-old neighbor who noticed suspicious events on the property and came to the crime scene himself.
Local media reported that the property belonged to a missing man’s brother and sister-in-law. The brother regularly posted comments on conspiracy theory websites targeting “secret societies” and intelligence agencies allegedly organizing false flag operations.
One of the strictest gun laws in the world
High-kill gun attacks are rare in Australia. The country has one of the strictest gun laws in the world. Automatic and semi-automatic weapons were banned in Australia after a gunman killed 35 people in Port Arthur on the island of Tasmania in 1996.
