Limits have been crossed, the “green gold” should never be used – a company from Wolfern (Upper Austria) is recalling a whole batch of pumpkin seed oil.
The analysis showed that Martin Danmayr’s “Wolferner Pumpkin Seed Oil” exceeded the maximum level for the sum of benzo(a)pyrene, benz(a)anthracene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and chrysene. The product with the expiration date 10/01/2023 was therefore assessed as harmful and unsafe and falls under the marketing ban. Only the lot with the best before date 01.10.2023 is affected.
Not suitable for consumption
The product is not suitable for consumption and can be returned by the consumer. Customers will be refunded the purchase price.
Benzo(a)pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. Benzo(b)fluoranthene, benz(a)anthracene and chrysene also belong to this group and are also suspected of carcinogenicity.
The cause has not yet been clarified
The affected farmer emphasizes that the recall does not mean that he is to blame for the contamination, but that he fulfills his duty of care. Growing oil pumpkins is just one part of farming. The kernels are roasted and pressed by an external company. And since September 2019, every batch is checked in the laboratory for safety and quality assurance reasons – this time the quality was not OK. The reason for this needs to be checked.
