Sweet wine specialty – ice wine harvest at cold -8 degrees in Deutschkreutz

Date:

To get an ice wine, certain criteria must be met. On the one hand, it must be at least -7 degrees for a few hours and the grapes must be completely frozen on the truss, on the other hand, it is a condition that they are harvested and pressed while still frozen.

It was minus 8 degrees when the last grapes in Deutschkreutz froze in the night from Monday to Tuesday. So everything perfect for the ice cream vintage! Albert Gsellmann and three other fellow winemakers threw themselves into the icy work and harvested the grapes.

Frozen when pressed
“The last few years have been quite difficult, because the cold was short-lived,” says Gsellmann. The grapes must still be frozen when pressed.

This year it worked – and relatively early. Because in recent years it was usually not until February that it was so cold that the ice wine would have run out. “The grapes are not so attractive anymore,” says Gsellmann.

First wine since 2007
“But this year they are still healthy and plump.” For Gsellmann it was the first ice wine since 2007. In the other districts people hope for next Sunday. Because -8 degrees is also announced there.
