They search Macron’s party headquarters for alleged illegal funding

The gendarmes are also investigating the American consulting firm Mckinsey for its intervention in the 2017 and 2022 presidential party election campaigns

French justice ordered searches at the headquarters of Renaissance, President Emmanuel Macron’s party and the offices of the US consultancy firm McKinsey in France. The data was created as part of an investigation opened by the National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) into the terms of intervention of private advisers in candidate Macron’s election campaigns for the 2017 and 2022 presidential elections.

The search of the McKinsey offices in Paris took place yesterday, the consultant confirmed in a statement, guaranteeing “full cooperation with the government, as has always been the case.” The gendarmes also searched Macron’s party headquarters on the same day, taking a particular interest in the campaign reports, according to the French press.

“It is normal for the judiciary to conduct free and independent investigations to shed all the light on this matter,” said Renacimiento. The presidential party, formerly known as La República en Marcha, made itself “available” to the investigators “to pass on any useful information about the campaigns mentioned in the scope of their investigation.”

The National Financial Prosecutor’s Office (PNF) opened two legal proceedings in October: the first to investigate whether there were irregularities in the accounts of Macron’s 2017 and 2022 election campaigns and the involvement of private advisers. The second judicial inquiry concerns “favoritism and concealment of favouritism”.

According to the television channel BFMTV, the judiciary suspects that a dozen McKinsey employees worked for free on the preparation of candidate Macron’s election manifesto for the 2007 presidential election. This work would have been organized by McKinsey and his advisers would have been assigned to very specific tasks during your working hours . After their first election victory, some McKinsey workers held positions of responsibility in their party or in ministerial cabinets.

The two legal proceedings were initiated following the release of a report by the Senate Investigation Committee on the growing influence of private consultancies on government policy. The ministries’ expenditure on private consultancy firms had more than doubled, from 379 million euros in 2018 to 894 million euros in 2021, according to the report of the Senate.

The opposition also questions whether Macron favored McKinsey by awarding him numerous government contracts during his first term. The American consultancy advised, among other things, the French government on anti-covid vaccination.
