Bishop “scared” – Schönborn brings criticism from opponents of vaccination

Date:

The diocesan bishop of St. Pölten, Alois Schwarz, has criticized Cardinal Christoph Schönborn for his “Let brain rain” statement to vaccination opponents on a TV program last Sunday.

Schwarz now fears a wave of withdrawals from the Catholic Church, as he told ORF Lower Austria on Holy Saturday, citing numerous critical letters received. Schönborn had caused a stir regarding the corona vaccination and the respective attitudes and the statement in the ORF “Pressure” “Dear God, let the brains rain”.

“Bishop there for everyone
The quote “personally scared him,” explains Schwarz. As a bishop, he is “there for everyone: for those who are vaccinated and for those who have reasons not to be vaccinated.” The head of the diocese of St. Pölten fears a further increase in church dismissals.

“We have paid too little attention to it”
“Some people write to us why we bishops have positioned ourselves so clearly. It’s true, and maybe they’re right. We haven’t paid enough attention to bringing in and reaching out to everyone,” he agrees.

In the “press hour”, Schönborn was also annoyed by the “constant nagging” of the Austrians about the corona measures and the associated government control. It is not the government that is zigzagging, but the virus itself.

Schönborn: Creating awareness
The Austrians should be aware of “how well they are doing”. It is quite normal that there are different political opinions on how to deal with the pandemic. That’s how it is all over the world. No one knows the absolute truth.
