You can’t choose your neighbors. In the case of Helmut Pachler it doesn’t matter, because Gerhard B. couldn’t have chosen a better one. When he collapsed lifeless on March 31, Pachler brought the man back to life. Now he has been awarded the Chancellor’s Lifesaver Medal!
“Suddenly the doorbell rang and my neighbor was standing there in shock. I immediately ran over,” recalls Pachler. It is clear on site: circulatory arrest! the defibrillator and the heart started beating again.
The story is remarkable enough. But: it happened on August 10, 2009, just before midnight. Also at that time, Pachler rushed to the aid of his neighbor and saved his life.
A life of help in times of need
For the 65-year-old, helping in exceptional situations is self-evident. 34 years ago, he gave up his job as a chef to pursue his dream job as a paramedic. But the joy of helping was awakened much earlier. “As a kid, after a bike accident, I used to pull my cousin to the doctor with a handcart,” Pachler recalls with a smile. Later, Pachler’s teacher died before his very eyes. And then there was the day he pulled four people out of a burning car wreck. It happened as it should: “At a certain point I started working for the rescue service and drove voluntarily.” Later followed a long professional career.
Even today, Pachler, now retired, still voluntarily gets into the ambulance. He wants to share his knowledge with his young colleagues, whom he affectionately calls ‘my boys’ during the ‘Krone’ appointment.
Pachler’s call: “It is important that people dare to help without hesitation. This is essential, especially with chest compressions!”
