Police are investigating – Vienna: Activists vented the tires of SUVs

Date:

According to the police in Vienna-Döbling, climate activists have released air from the tires of luxury SUVs several times in recent days. According to one of those affected, one of these actions led to a dangerous incident on Saturday.

The activists had left a note, but he didn’t notice and drove off, the APA driver reported. He skidded onto a sidewalk and collided with a pedestrian.

Pedestrian hit a wall
According to the witness, the collision happened on Saturday afternoon after he had driven about 400 meters when he could no longer control his nine-year-old Mercedes due to a lack of tire pressure when braking. The pedestrian was even pushed against a wall and fell. However, the man insisted that he was not injured and, despite being asked to wait for the police together, left the scene of the accident before the officers arrived. The driver, who claims to need a large car for work and was on a business trip, also told police.

Writing with “obvious context of climate activism”
Police confirmed on Sunday that the incident had been reported by the man and reported further cases of “abandoned tires” on so-called SUVs in Döbling. Letters “with a clear context of climate activism” were affixed to the windshields, police spokesman Philipp Haßlinger said. “Reports have been written about the incidents and the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution has been informed.” There were initially no reports of property damage because the tires were punctured and not flat.

Gruppe “The Tire Extinguishers”
Letters available to APA, left on the vehicles and marked by the group The Tire Extinguishers, read: “WARNING – Your gas guzzler is deadly. We have deflated one or more tires.” It also criticizes off-road vehicles for their environmental damage and the increased risk of injury in collisions with pedestrians.

The group “The Tire Blushers” also announced to deflate the tires of SUVs in Innsbruck at the end of November. They are also active in many other European cities and post their actions on Twitter to draw attention to the climate crisis.
