The German government wants to carry out deportations more quickly in the future – a corresponding bill was approved by the cabinet on Wednesday. Among other things, the maximum duration of detention upon departure should be extended.
SPD Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser presented the package of measures. Instead of the previous ten days, migrants staying illegally in the country can now be held for 28 days. This is intended to give authorities more time to prepare deportations and prevent those affected from absconding before being returned.
About 50,000 foreigners in Germany have to leave the country
Police and authorities should be given further enforcement rights in the deportation process. Both Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Faeser had emphasized that the deportations had to be accelerated. The measures are part of a migration package agreed within the traffic light coalition. It also includes faster work opportunities for refugees. The German Interior Ministry estimates the number of foreigners forced to leave the country at around 50,000. The SPD politician pointed out that the number of deportations this year was approximately 27 percent higher than in the same period last year. There is occasional criticism of the tightening of the law from the SPD and the Greens.
Agreements are being negotiated with countries of origin
The countries responsible for deportations and the opposition complain that returns are only possible if the countries of origin also accept that people are taken back. However, this is often not the case. That is why the Federal Government’s Special Representative, Joachim Stamp, has been negotiating such agreements for months.
