The United Nations this Sunday marked International Migrants’ Day by remembering the at least 51,000 dead who have lost their lives on the dangerous migration routes over the past eight years.
In 2020, more than 281 million people were international migrants, while at the end of 2021, more than 59 million people were living as internally displaced persons.
“Migration is a powerful one agent of economic growth, dynamism and understanding. But if it is not regulated, if it is done through more dangerous routes, the cruel realm of traffickers, the price it demands is terrible,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
The UN also commemorates the thousands of missing on land and sea, each “a sister, a brother, a son, mother or father” before making a plea for their human rights, which must be respected “without discrimination of any kind with regard to the conditions of their displacement, whether forced, voluntary or authorized”.
According to the UN, migrants are a source of prosperity, innovation and sustainable development for countries of origin, transit and host countries.
The United Nations therefore calls for everything possible to be done “such as humanitarian necessity, moral duty and legal obligationto prevent loss of life, while drawing attention to the 22 million people who are internally displaced each year by the climate crisis.
