After about two weeks of negotiations, the participants of the World Nature Summit in Montreal, Canada, agreed on a final statement on Monday. The approximately 200 countries have set themselves the goal of protecting at least 30 percent of the world’s land and sea area by 2030. They also want to spend more money on protecting biodiversity.
After the adoption, cheers erupted at the plenary session at the Montreal Convention Center, which had previously been postponed again and again. Organizers, scientists and representatives of non-governmental organizations had hoped until the very end that a leading global agreement on species protection would be adopted at the meeting.
The 15th World Summit on Nature – also known as COP15 for short – was originally scheduled to take place in China in 2020, but was then postponed and split due to the ongoing pandemic situation there. The first part of the negotiations took place mainly online in Kunming, China last October. Austrian Minister of Climate Protection Leonore Gewessler (Greens) also participated in the conference.
