Navy ship sunk in Gulf of Thailand: search for missing persons is underway

Date:

A Thai navy vessel has been caught in a storm and sunk in the Gulf of Thailand. So far, 78 crew members have been rescued from the water, three of them seriously injured. 31 people are still missing and ships and helicopters are searching for them.

The incident happened about 37 kilometers off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan province on Sunday evening. The US-made corvette was on patrol and was hit by high waves, media reports said. This caused water to enter, the power to fail and the main engine to fail.

The ship has been in service for about 36 years. It equipped, among other things, for submarine defense.
