The pope was “appalled” by the corruption scandal in the European Parliament. “What is at stake here is corruption, not sin. It’s much worse because corruption affects the soul,” Francis said.
“Today people are sliding from sin to corruption, and we must not tolerate that,” the pope said in an interview with Vatican expert Fabio Marchese Ragona. “How is it possible that these people who work in administration are sliding into corruption in this way?”
Francis added: “Sinners yes, but not corrupt. I’m weak too, we’re all weak. Everyone has their own weakness, let’s say their personality: one is a liar, the other gets angry, the other is in a bad mood. Everyone has their own flaws. Sinners yes, but not corrupt,” the pope stressed.
The EU parliament has been rocked by a corruption scandal for more than a week. Several suspects, who were found with at least 1.5 million euros in cash, have been arrested. They are suspected of being paid by Qatar to defend the interests of the Gulf state.
