“Unilateral demand” – London warns Kiev of a premature ceasefire

Date:

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has warned of rushing negotiations for a ceasefire in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Sunak said that “any unilateral call from Russia for a ceasefire is completely meaningless in the current context.” This would be used by Russia to regroup, Sunak said Monday during a meeting with Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) leaders in Riga.

According to the British Prime Minister, real negotiations cannot and should not take place until Russia withdraws. At the summit of defense cooperation between Baltic and Northern European states, Sunak called for more arms shipments to Kiev. Ukraine needs air defense systems, artillery and armored vehicles, the British prime minister said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also campaigned for this, who addressed the participants via video and addressed each of them individually with concrete demands.

The British continue to supply arms
Before Sunak’s trip to Latvia, Britain had announced that it would continue to supply Ukraine with arms for the next year. At the JEF meeting, the British Prime Minister – like Latvian Prime Minister and host Krisjanis Karins – stressed the importance of Western sanctions against Moscow and its supporters. “We must remain focused on disrupting Russia’s ability to redeploy and resupply,” Sunak said. “I am thinking in particular of Iran and the weapons it is currently supplying to Russia.”

Selenskyj pointed out that Ukraine was attacked again last night with Iranian Shahed-type drones. These came from a new shipment that Russia received from Tehran, the Ukrainian president said, according to the official translation.
