Council for Integration warns: – Broken German as new school language

Date:

The educational opportunities of migrant families continue to decline. In 2023, 100 additional language assistants will come to Vienna.

The lack of knowledge of German caused a stir, both in kindergarten and schools. For Integration Councilor Christoph Wiederkehr (NEOS), this is an inevitable consequence of the many crises. These would have greatly limited the educational opportunities of students from low-educated families.

The Vienna Integration Council has now been instructed to make recommendations for action. “Viennese schools are characterized by super-diverse classes. As a result, more and more groups of friends with a mixed language are emerging and German is increasingly becoming the lingua franca,” says Kenan Güngör of the Integration Council.

Focus more on promoting German
While this is a positive development, spoken German falls short. It would be important to pay more attention to promoting German. This should start in kindergarten. “Our goal for 2023 is therefore to hire 100 additional language assistants,” says Wiederkehr. But that is not enough, because the government program stipulates that the support staff will be increased from 300 (current status) to 500.

In addition, parent work must increasingly take place in schools. “There should be no outsourcing of educational success to the family, as this would overwhelm education-poor families even more and exacerbate existing social inequalities,” says Güngör.
