Sheer horror for the animal world, alarming levels of particulate matter, more than a thousand injuries a year, some of them serious, costly damage to property – even retail has begun a rethink with the New Year’s Eve boom. Many cities in Austria, especially Vienna, are doing without fireworks on New Year’s Eve this year. Despite all these aspects, and especially despite the war and the financial crisis, the madness among the population seems unchecked – which can be felt and heard weeks before the turn of the year.
