Hundreds of people demonstrate in Paris to protest the shooting at a Kurdish cultural center

The organizers end the demonstration earlier than planned due to clashes with the police

Hundreds of people gathered on Place de la République in Paris on Saturday to protest against the shooting by an armed man at a Kurdish cultural center on Friday that left three people dead.

The rally, organized by the Kurdish Democratic Council (CDK), sought to express their rejection of the attack against whom they defined as “Kurdish militants”, although there is still no official information on the identity of the dead.

Numerous red flags of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) were observed during the demonstration, other purple ones in memory of three Kurdish women killed in 2013, also in Paris, and other yellow flags with the face of Kurdistan’s leader Abdullah Ocalan , according to the BFM TV chain.

Similarly, the headquarters of the city council of the 10th arrondissement of Paris, the part of the capital where the shooting took place, has removed the French flag from its facade and instead raised the Kurdish flag “in tribute to the victims”.

In fact, the mayor of the 10th district, Alexandra Cordebard, has assured on her Twitter profile that the company is “together with the Kurds of France”, and they pay tribute this Saturday to the victims of the “racist attack committed on Rue Edingen “. .

Although the concentration has developed peacefully, there have been clashes near the Plaza de la República between demonstrators and police after 1pm.

According to BFM TV, some protesters attacked security officers with small projectiles and even threw street furniture. The police, for their part, responded with the use of tear gas.

However, some attendees’ tension with the police was not shared by the protesters as a whole, who even came to stand between each other, forming a human chain that also included members of the Kurdish Democratic Council.

After this violent episode, the organizers of the demonstration decided to end the concentration earlier than planned. The march was to advance to the Bastille, an area where clashes have occurred.

The Kurdish Democratic Council has denounced that tempers ran high when a group of “provocateurs” boarded a car next to the demonstration, showed the Turkish flag through the windows and made the gesture of the ‘Grey Wolves’ .

‘Grey Wolves’ is a Turkish ultra-nationalist racist organization that is extremely hostile to the Kurdish community. French authorities ordered its disbandment in 2020, as it was a far-right organization. Its relatives make a hand gesture by raising the pointer and little finger and bringing the rest of the fingers together.

Subsequently, a large part of those present returned to Edingenstraat to continue, again in a calm atmosphere, with the tribute to the deceased, as planned for the minor disturbances.

After 3 p.m., the Plaza de la República was already back to normal and hardly any demonstrators were present, although the important police force was still deployed.
