For fear of espionage – British military blocks Chinese cars

Date:

In Britain, the care of possible espionage is growing through Chinese electric cars. Military personnel and government officials have now been instructed to keep vehicles away from sensitive facilities with Chinese components.

British media report corresponding instructions to the staff of the Wyton of the Royal Air Force, a central hub of the military secret services.

In particular, these vehicles may not be introduced on the base in more than three kilometers. The reason: there is a suspicion that built -in systems such as satellite navigation and sensors can be used for surveillance.

The British authorities fear that data about movements, conversations and environments can be recorded and may be transferred to Chinese bodies. That is why in general there may be no more discussions in affected vehicles about sensitive topics, regardless of where the car is located.

The focus is on vehicles from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and MG, but also models of Western brands such as BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and Volkswagen, provided that they contain Chinese components.

The British government sees these measures a necessary step to protect national security. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense emphasized that strict security protocols exist to protect sensitive information. So far, however, there has been no uniform regulation for all military facilities; The current restrictions apply to selected locations with special safety requirements.

The discussion about the safety of Chinese technologies in critical infrastructure is not new. For this, concern about the use of Chinese components in areas such as telecommunications and energy were expressed. The current measures against Chinese electric vehicles reflect growing caution compared to potential security risks.

The British government is now faced with the challenge of controlling the balance between economic cooperation with China and the protection of national interests. Current developments can also have an impact on future purchasing policy and the integration of foreign technologies in safety areas. The spokeswoman for conservative safety Alicia Kearns demanded: “We have to completely eliminate the Chinese electric cars in the army and the government fleets.”
