In New York City, migrants receive a free one-way plane ticket. Democratic Mayor Eric Adams argues that it would be cheaper to take them to the location of their choice than to house them for months.
At the same time, Adams warns that those who choose to remain in New York will have to prepare for a winter in which they will have to sleep outside with full shelters. Critics accuse Adams of sending a message of lack of compassion for the measure.
There is “no more room for migrants” in New York, Adams has never tired of emphasizing in recent weeks. Since April 2022, more than 100,000 migrants have crossed the Mexican border into New York. The rush to the city has been particularly strong since Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott decided to transport asylum seekers to New York.
“I don’t understand how this is supposed to work”
“I would like that, but if they gave me the ticket and guaranteed me an apartment, at least for a certain period of time, I would go,” says Andrea, a migrant from Venezuela. “But getting a ticket and nothing else, I don’t understand how that’s supposed to work.”
As the American daily Politico reports, approximately 4,000 migrants currently arrive in New York City every week. According to the mayor’s council, the measure is necessary to create space for newcomers.
