When Kujtim F. – the shooter of the Vienna attack – was still in prison because he wanted to travel to Syria, he spoke to fellow prisoners about his admiration for IS. The arms trade was allegedly planned by the sixth defendant in prison. The prisoners did not take the planned gun purchase seriously: “I only assessed it as a child.”
The first witnesses are heard on the fifth day of the Vienna terror trial. Former prisoners of the suspect and the killer have been summoned. They are mainly intended to provide information about the purchase of weapons – organized in prison by the fifth and sixth defendants. The weapons with which the assassin Kujtim F. shot four people on November 2, 2020 and seriously injured many others. The six defendants in the Vienna Regional Court are said to be his assistants and ratifiers.
Long Gun acquired for “Accomplice”.
“In prison, people talk. 1,000 people talk about 1,000 things, but nothing ever comes of it,’ says an ex-detainee of the sixth defendant excitedly on the witness stand. How the young man could not have suspected that something bad could happen with the weapon he had bought is incomprehensible to one of the jurors. The witness knew that the 22-year-old suspect wanted to obtain a long gun for an “accomplice” and so contacted the five accused arms dealer.
This – represented by lawyer Astrid Wagner – delivered the assault rifle and handgun to the shooter of the attack. It eventually killed four people. The former prisoner on the witness stand claims not to have known about such plans of the fifth and sixth defendants. He says of the 22-year-old: “I underestimated him. I judged him as a child. I never thought it was really true, that they actually do it.” During the investigation, he already spoke about the radical tendencies of the sixth defendant.
“He was totally groggy!”
Another prisoner – but this time from Kujtim F. – can report on the killer himself. His testimony was read. After his prison sentence, the man was deported and is no longer accessible to the Vienna court. He says of the later shooter: “His head was only in Syria the whole time. He was completely stupid!” And this despite the fact that the killer was convicted because he wanted to join IS and travel to Syria. The fellow prisoner also knew about a planned purchase of weapons.
Assassin’s mother and father called as witnesses
The six accused accomplices in the terrorist attack in Vienna have already testified the days before. They are charged by the public prosecutor with involvement in terrorist crimes related to murder, terrorist organization and criminal organization. Further witnesses will be heard on January 3, 2023. The shooter’s father and mother have been invited for the following day. The DNA report on the traces on the murder weapons and cartridges is also still being processed.
