After countless rumors, it is now certain: the 56-year-old renowned Swiss director Stefan Bachmann, who has been director of the Schauspiel Köln since 2013, will take over the new management of the Burgtheater from the 2024/25 season. Acting director Martin Kusej withdrew his application on Tuesday afternoon because the owner apparently did not have “unconditional confidence”.
Stefan Bachmann was born in Zurich in 1966. He studied German, general literature, theater and religious studies. In addition to extensive theater assignments, he also worked as a journalist and wrote for the “Weltwoche” and the “Tages-Anzeiger”.
He learned how to manage houses relatively early. At the age of only 32, he became acting director of the Theater Basel for five years, which was voted Theater of the Year in the review poll of the magazine “Theater heute” in its first season. Since 2013 he has been director of the Schauspiel Köln.
Bachmann has been one of the regular directors at the Burg since 2005 with his production of “Waste”. He received two Nestroy Awards for work at the Burgtheater and the Akademietheater: in 2008 for the best direction (Wajdi Mouawad’s “Burnings” at the Akademietheater), in 2012 for the best German-language performance (Elfriede Jelineks “Winterreise” at the Akademietheater).
Stefan Bachmann is married to theater actress Melanie Kretschmann, with whom he also works. The couple has three sons and a daughter.
