US police use helicopter to chase escaped llama

Date:

In Fairfax County in the US state of Virginia, a llama drama took place on Monday: the 20-year-old llama “Kolby” escaped, the police spared no effort to catch the escaped cloven-hoofed lady again. Among other things, a helicopter and an infrared camera and half a dozen agents were deployed to capture the agile four-legged friend.

At first glance, the video looks like a manhunt for an escaped serial killer. In a forest near a highway, the escaped animal was spotted – “Kolby” was apparently on an adventure – the director had great difficulty in catching the runaway.

There are times when the police in Fairfax County need to catch cattle or an emu. “But this is the first time we’ve had to hunt a llama,” said Animal Protection Director Siobhan Chase. A motorist had seen “Kolby” on the road – but the animal wouldn’t run off with a lasso that an animal rights activist made from a dog leash. Finally, the llama ran into the woods.

Police officers were afraid of spitting attacks
Officers in a police helicopter eventually got wind of the chase and joined the operation. With the help of an infrared camera, they were able to quickly track down the runaway. The next time they tried to capture her, the officers on the ground feared the llama might try to spit on her as a defense mechanism. Fortunately, the police officers were spared this unpleasant experience.

When running past, the animal was eventually caught with a hug. Cheers and laughter erupted in the helicopter. How “Kolby” managed to escape is a mystery to her owner. Officials suspect the elderly llama was simply up for “a wild adventure.” “And all that probably exhausted her,” says a police officer with conviction.
