Curious incident at the Sainte-Musse clinic in Toulon, France. An 88-year-old man had to undergo emergency surgery because an eight-inch shell from World War I had lodged in his anal canal. The hospital was evacuated as a precaution.
“An apple, a mango or even a can of shaving cream. We are used to unusual objects being in the wrong places. But a grenade? Never,” a hospital worker told the French newspaper Var Matin. The elderly gentleman had come to the clinic and simply explained that the more than 100-year-old weapon of war was in his buttocks.
Weapon stopped working
While the man assured that the weapon was no longer operational, the doctors reacted quickly and evacuated much of the hospital – including the children’s ward. As “Var Matin” reported, numerous firefighters and bomb disposal command had to move in.
Subsequent investigation confirmed that the grenade was no longer operational.
Man is doing well after emergency surgery
Doctors operated on the man and had to remove the grenade from his stomach. “Imported items rarely end up where they came in,” said a clinic employee. The 88-year-old is doing well. However, it remains unclear how or why the weapon of war ended up in his anus.
