The driver of a delivery van noticed the truck’s emergency braking process too late when a car switched from the hard shoulder to the first lane – a Hungarian was airlifted to the University Hospital in Krems.
A 46-year-old man collided with a truck with a trailer on Thursday afternoon on the Westautobahn (A1) towards Vienna near Neulengbach in the St. Pölten district.
The truck driver had initiated an emergency stop because a motorist would have driven at low speed from a hard shoulder to the first lane. The man was trapped in the car and flew to the University Hospital in Krems, the police reported on Friday.
overlooked trailer
The 63-year-old Bulgarian may have overlooked the semi-trailer truck around 2:30 p.m. when he switched to the first lane. To avoid a collision, the 65-year-old Hungarian made an emergency stop. His compatriot at the wheel of the van with trailer may have noticed this too late and drove into the back of the truck combination. The trapped 46-year-old had to be freed by the fire brigade. The emergency medical helicopter “Christophorus 2” was deployed. The A1 was closed until 4:30 p.m.
