On the night of Friday, there was a dramatic fire in a three-storey residential building in Vienna-Liesing. Sadly, one resident died fleeing the fire and another was seriously injured.
When the fire suddenly broke out, the resident tried to flee down the aisle and collapsed. The fire department suspects that the door was left open and that the thick smoke from the fire then spread into the entire stairwell. The heat was so intense that the front door partially burned through.
Seriously injured in life-threatening condition
The professional firefighters entered the apartment wearing breathing apparatus. Residents were brought to safety with a revolving ladder. At the same time, the firefighters found two lifeless people in the heavily smoke-filled stairwell. For one resident, all help came too late, the seriously injured were taken to hospital after first aid.
Four people were able to escape from the fire house in time, three others were rescued with a rotating ladder from the street side windows of the 1st and 2nd floors. The cause of the fire on the first floor is still unknown and an investigation is underway.
Always keep doors closed
Fire experts advise staying in your own apartment in a house with several apartments if it is not affected by the fire. Close the doors to the hallway, toilet and bathroom and draw attention to yourself with an open window. Under no circumstances try to escape through the smoke-filled staircase. If possible, the door of the fire-resistant home should remain closed so that the stairwell remains smoke-free for as long as possible.
