A St. Petersburg opposition politician has sued Russian President Vladimir Putin for discrediting the military – for using the word “war” for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “He called the war war,” local MP Nikita Yuferev tweeted late Thursday evening. At the same time, thousands of people had already been convicted across the country.
Officially, the war against Ukraine is called “military special operation” only in Russia. At an impromptu press conference on Thursday, Putin declared: “Our aim is not to continue turning the flywheel of the military conflict, but to end the war.” It was the first time the head of state spoke of a war. Yuferev says he has lodged a complaint with Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov.
No criminal offense established
The lawsuit has no chance of legal success because recently several propagandists close to the Kremlin had spoken of “war” without being prosecuted. Russian justice has not even established a criminal offense in the demand of Anton Krassovsky, broadcasting director of the Kremlin channel RT, to burn or drown Ukrainian children.
Wanted to accuse Putin of high treason
Yuferev, on the other hand, had to pay a fine in September for discrediting the military. Earlier, he and other members of a district parliament in St. Petersburg had called on Russia’s parliament, the State Duma, to accuse Putin of high treason over the war in Ukraine.
