Drug Shortages – Antibiotics: ‘Trying Everyone Gets Some’

Date:

Aggravated situation around antibiotics and various other drugs: Because of the limited availability, healthy people have “stockpiled with concern”. The pharmaceutical wholesaler tries to maintain an even distribution of antibiotics to the local pharmacies in order to keep supplying.

“In the case of antibiotics, we currently allocate the products to the pharmacies. That means that we try to ensure that every pharmacy gets something and that we don’t throw everything away today, but that we can still deliver tomorrow or even during the Christmas period,” said Andreas Windischbauer, president of the Association of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (Phago) on Thursday evening in ORF – “Vienna Today” explained “If the cold and flu epidemic subsides and there are fewer prescriptions, then of course the situation would ease.”

500 medicines are not or hardly available
The Federal Office for Health Care Safety (BASG) put about 500 medicines on its website on Friday that are not or only partially available in Austria. Antibiotics had recently been added to the already stricken cold and painkillers.

In terms of delivery problems, not much has changed in recent days, says Peter Richter from the Association of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Pharmig) to the APA. But then there was the “excess storage”. Specifically, antibiotics “should only be prescribed by the doctor as needed when you are ill,” Richter stressed.

Export stop in China: “No such plans are known”
The Pharmig spokesman calmed down about reports in the German media that China could stop the export of ibuprofen and paracetamol due to the exploding corona numbers at home. He was not aware of such plans. Moreover, Europe is not only dependent on China for these drugs. Paracetamol is also produced in large quantities in India and ibuprofen also in the US.
