Now targeting NGOs – Taliban: new radical assault on women’s rights

Date:

The radical Islamic Taliban in Afghanistan continue to restrict women’s rights. The Ministry of Economic Affairs there on Saturday instructed all aid organizations in the country to ban their female employees from coming to work. This applies to all domestic and foreign non-governmental organizations. Just a few days ago, the Taliban banned female students from private and public universities.

The female NGO employees are not allowed to work until further notice because some of them have not adhered to the interpretation of the Islamic dress code for women, a spokesperson said, according to Reuters. Whether the order also applies to United Nations organizations, which have a strong presence in Afghanistan, was initially left open.

Meanwhile, in the western Afghan city of Herat, dozens of women demonstrated against their ban from the country’s universities. One protester said they took to the streets in small groups with slogans such as “Education is our right”. The women gathered in front of the provincial governor’s office. The Taliban then dispersed the protests with water cannons and batons, it said.

Videos posted on social networks showed a fire engine spraying demonstrators with a liquid. The Taliban showed an increased military presence in the capital Kabul on Saturday. There, too, dozens of women demonstrated on Thursday against the recently imposed university ban. Since then, one of the women has reportedly gone missing.

On Tuesday, the Taliban immediately banned women from all universities in Afghanistan. Since taking power in August 2021, Islamists have massively restricted women’s rights. Girls and women are largely excluded from public life. In the past, women who stood up for their rights were repeatedly detained, sometimes for weeks.
