Odessa, Christmas 2022. “Does prayer, intercession with angels or saints help you for peace in this time of murder and destruction?” A question I ask several times in my “Ukraine Mission”. “Yes, of course. Especially the meditative prayer of the rosary,” 54-year-old Svetlana confidently answers. Like almost all Ukrainians interviewed, she stands by her faith. She is proud of it. And she hopes for help from heaven. Particularly moving: in the many Caritas food parcels she puts together, there is a picture of an icon – as a kind of “religious reinforcement”.
Despite the horrors of war, the country is preparing for the most difficult commemoration celebrations. Unleashed brutality is Putin’s strategy.
